The Casa de Su Majestad El Rey has announced that Princess Leonor, Princess of Asturias, will publicly swear the oath to the Constitution of Spain (Jura la Constitución) on Tuesday, October 31, 2023, the same day celebrates her 18th birthday, reaching age of majority. Princess Leonor will take the oath to the Constitution in a special ceremony held in the presence of the Cortes Generales (General Courts), the bicameral chamber (Congress and Senate) of the Spanish parliament in Madrid. The princess is currently a Lady Cadet and officer-in-training at the Academia General Militar Zaragoza (AGM Zaragoza).

In the presence of her father, King Felipe VI, the Spanish royal family, the cabinet and members of both chambers of parliament, Princess Leonor will take the following oath. The oath is the same taken by her father as Prince of Asturias on January 30, 1986, when he reached the age of majority:

“Juro desempeñar fielmente mis funciones, guardar y hacer guardar la Constitución y las leyes, respetar los derechos de los ciudadanos y de las comunidades autónomas y mantener fidelidad al Rey.”

In English, the statement is translated as follows:

“I swear to faithfully carry out my duties, to keep and ensure that the Constitution and the laws are kept, to respect the rights of citizens and the autonomous communities and to maintain fidelity to the King.”

Following the oath-taking ceremony, Princess Leonor will receive the Collar of Order of Charles III from her father, the King, at the Royal Palace of Madrid. This will be followed by a luncheon held in the princess’ honor with the king, the royal family and key members of the Spanish government. These are the only public events planned for Princess Leonor‘s 18th birthday.
