A monarchy (pl: monarchies) is a form of government in which a person, the monarch, is head of state for life or until abdication. There are three types of monarchies: Absolute, constitutional and mixed.

An absolute monarchy is one in which the monarch rules in his or her own right or power; the monarch’s power is unlimited, even though a constitution may exist. A constitutional monarchy, also known as parliamentary monarchy, or democratic monarchy, is a form of monarchy in which the monarch rules in accordance with a constitution and is not alone in making decisions. A mixed government is a form of government that combines elements of democracy, aristocracy, and monarchy.

Traditional monarchies, also known as subnational monarchies, exist within many countries, however most of these monarchies hold very limited or no political power. A traditional monarchy is one in which the head of the monarchical polity (whether a geographic territory or an ethnic group), and the polity itself, are subject to a sovereign state.
